Department of Kinesiology

Movement drives how we live, think, and engage with the world. From optimizing elite athletic performance to improving rehabilitation outcomes, kinesiology plays a vital role in enhancing quality of life. It explores how the body functions, adjusts, and reacts to movement, giving professionals the tools to improve health, boost athletic performance, and reduce injury—translating science into meaningful, real-world impact.

About

The Department of Kinesiology offers a rigorous, science-based education that combines biomechanics, exercise physiology, human anatomy, and sports nutrition with hands-on, real-world experience. Guided by dedicated faculty, students apply their learning in laboratory settings, contribute to research projects, and engage with the community through internships and service opportunities. Through personalized mentorship and practical experiences, graduates are well-prepared for careers in healthcare, rehabilitation, athletic training, and advanced graduate studies.

Research

Student-led research is a valuable component of the Kinesiology Department. The capstone courses provide students with the opportunity to contribute to existing research projects or propose a new area of study. This unique experience encourages collaboration with other disciplines – allowing for curiosity to be driven from many perspectives. Currently, biology and kinesiology students are working together to investigate pre- and post-recovery methods in student athletes using VALD Performance technology.

This project stems from prior research on functional asymmetry which was accepted for a poster presentation by the Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR) in 2025.

Student Testimonial

“Research leaves you with a tangible product at the end, and it feels great to know that you’ve somehow contributed your own small piece to a larger body of knowledge that could eventually influence how we think about athletic performance and training. This experience helped me appreciate how biomechanics research turns everyday training habits into scientific questions, and it made me more comfortable thinking critically and troubleshooting solutions to tackle large-scale projects.”
