International Tutor Training Program Certification

The Academic Success Center Peer Tutoring Program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association’s (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC). Tutors in our program participate in a rigorous training within their first two semesters that qualifies them for the CRLA ITTPC level 1 tutor certification. This level 1 certification allows the program to require and ensure a level of professionalism, mentoring abilities, and experience from our tutors that, in turn, ensures students receive a high quality level of tutoring and support.

Tutor of the Year 2024-2025

Luis Orozco - Tutor of the Year 2024-2025

Luis Orozco

Luis Orozco has tutored Accounting and Computer Science in the Student Success Center since September 2024. Luis has been described by his tutees as reliable, positive, punctual, kind, knowledgeable, encouraging, and supportive. One student said, “He is patient and has enthusiasm and belief in my abilities. He also liked to help me by building confidence with the subject.”

When discussing Luis’ ability to assist tutees in becoming independent learners, another student said, “Instead of just telling me how to figure it out, he always encouraged me to use my skills to get to the right answer. Luis made sure I was asking questions when I really didn't know something, and he’d ask me questions to guide me to figure it out. At first, I really struggled with the homework, but with his help I got the chance to understand it a lot better.” Another student said, “He is a tutor with a positive attitude that creates a supportive and motivating learning environment by focusing on my progress rather than my mistakes. He likes to encourage a growth mindset, helping me see challenges as opportunities instead of an obstacle.”

Finally, when discussing Luis’ ability to create a comfortable learning environment, one student said, “When I got something wrong, Luis always encouraged me to try again. We’d go through each step to figure out the work, and he gave me good tips on how to study before the test came. Something that also helped me a lot was him telling me how he also struggled with this class. He made me understand that I am not the only one who struggles and that there is always room for improvement.”

Luis completed the University’s College Reading and Learning Association International Tutor Training Program and has done a wonderful job incorporating tutoring strategies learned into his sessions.
