About Rich Murphy

Rich Murphy became the Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Redlands in the summer of 2007.  He also serves as a member of the faculty for the Department of Physical Education.

The 2024-25 season saw the Bulldog tie for fourth in the SCIAC regular season with an 8-8 record. Overall, they finished 13-13. AJ Wick was first team All-SCIAC and Leila Hosn made the second team. Wick also added a first team selection to the D3hoops.com All-Region 10 team. Alex Facelo posted four records inside the top-15 in single-game history for made threes. Hosn had two nine-assists games, both tied for 14th most. She also had a seven-steal game, 11th best. Wick had six top-23 rebound games, including 24 rebounds against Caltech, the second most. Wick finished with the ninth most points in single season history (414), second in offensive rebounds (115), second in defensive rebounds (227), second in total rebounds (342), and seventh in blocks (37). Colbi Zorich finished with the eighth highest free throw percentage (83.8). Hosn had the second most assists (140).

With a young roster filled with mostly underclass players in 2023-24, they finished 13-12 and made it to the SCIAC Postseason semifinal. Colbi Zorich was named All-SCIAC First Team and Aliyah Anderson made the second team. Those two finished ninth and 12th in single-season free throw percentage at 82.2 and 81.0. Freshman AJ Wick had 167 defensive rebounds and 239 total rebounds, the sixth and ninth most in program history.

Went 19-8 in 2022-23 and made it to the NCAA tournament for only the third time in program history, all of which have come under Murphy, after winning the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

Seven single-season top-10 marks were set including the block record which Hannah Jerrier broke with 63. Alyssa Downs became the all-time leading scorer with 1,661 career points. She also broke the career made threes with 291 and the career free throw percentage at .871. Jerrier finished her career with 146 blocks, a new program record. Downs, Jerrier, and Chyanne Pagkalinawan all made All-SCIAC.

The Bulldogs had one of their most successful season in 2021-22, going 19-5 overall and 14-2 in SCIAC, winning the regular season title and earning the number one seed in the postseason tournament. The 14 wins tie the 2019-20 season for the most conference wins in program history, it was also the 10th time in 14 full seasons that the Bulldogs have reached double-digits wins under Murphy.

Hannah Jerrier, Alyssa Downs, and Angelina Roque all were named to the All-SCIAC First Team with Chyanne Pagkalinawan being selected to the second team. The four All-SCIAC players since 2012-13. Jerrier was also seclected to the D3hoops.com All-West Region Second Team. The program was also named on the special mention list by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

Murphy joined the Bulldogs from Humboldt State University where he was involved in the athletics program either as a student-athlete or assistant coach/ P.E. instructor for a total of nine years.  Most recently, he was the Lumberjacks' Assistant Women's Basketball Coach, heading up the recruiting responsibilities and working in all aspects of the Division II program.  In 2006-07, he helped guide the team back to the NCAA Championships after an 11-year absence, finishing third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC).

In addition, Murphy has worked with the men's basketball programs at Humboldt, Columbia College, and De Anza Community College.  Throughout his career, he has gained teaching experience in a variety of Physical Education courses, along with Spanish.

Murphy completed his Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, teaching credential, and Master of Science at Humboldt State University.   He competed for the Lumberjacks for two seasons as a shooting guard.  He landed on the All-Conference First Team twice and was voted the team's MVP both years of his career.  In 1993-94, he earned Second Team All-West Region honors.  Murphy was named the 1994 HSU Male Athlete of the Year and voted onto HSU's All-Century Team.  In 2002, he was inducted into the HSU Athletic Hall of Fame.  Prior to attending Humboldt, Murphy competed in basketball at Moorpark Junior College.

In his spare time, Murphy enjoys competing and watching all types of sports and spending time with his family.
