Transfer application checklist

The Common Application for Transfer or free University of Redlands Transfer Application for Spring 2025 is now available.
- Official transcripts from each university attended. If coursework was completed outside of the U.S. it must have a SpanTran, IERF, or WES evaluation issued to the University of Redlands.
- Official transcripts from each secondary school attended, including proof of high school graduation - Students whose native language is not English, cannot apply test optional and may meet English proficiency by providing one of the following scores:
- 550 SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing
- 21 ACT English and Reading Sections
- TOEFL minimum 80iBT/550 paper based
- IELTS minimum 6.5
- iTEP minimum 3.9
- Duolingo English Test (DET) minimum 105
- Graduation from a secondary school in which the primary language of instruction is English
- Completion of one college-level English composition course from a U.S. regionally accredited institution with a C grade or better
- Certificate of Finances and proof of financial support
*Students may transfer up to 66 units from a two-year institution or 96 units from a four-year institution.
Application portal & status
Once you apply to Redlands, you will be sent an online Admissions portal login. This portal is where you will check your application status, check the status of admissions materials and learn what is still needed, view your assigned admissions counselor, and the place you will submit your enrollment deposit. You will be asked to submit your admissions materials by a specific deadline.
To check the status of your application, you'll need your login information, which was sent to you via the email you used on your application. If you do not have this information, please email admissions@redlands.edu with your name and date of birth and we will resend.
Please note it may take up to 14 business days to process your supporting documents. ACT and SAT scores sent directly to us from the testing service may take longer to arrive. Please contact the Admissions Office before requesting scores to be resent.
What makes for a good application?
Your college application is a reflection of you. We want to learn more about you and your experiences in and out of the classroom.
Academic record
Your transcript reflects your academic pattern of courses and grades and helps us to see your successes and challenges.
Letters(s) of Recommendation
Give us a another perspective of you as a student.
Essay
Write about who you are and the experiences that have shaped you. Don't forget to answer the question.
Test optional
Test scores can be listed in the Common App through self-reporting. Redlands is a test-optional institution which means students, whose native language is English, have the option to not submit SAT or ACT scores if they do not believe their test scores truly reflect their potential for success in college. Regardless of their decision to submit, all students will be considered for admission and merit scholarships through a holistic review process.
Should a student opt to have their test scores considered, please note the following:
- We will accept self-reported test scores on the Common Application, however should a student choose to enroll, official scores will need to be submitted prior to the start of their first semester.
- The writing portion for the SAT or ACT is not required.
- We encourage students to submit all scores, as we superscore! Superscoring means if you took the ACT or SAT two times, we would use the highest scores from each section to create your score.

How to apply as a graduate student

International applicants (students requiring an F-1 or J-1 visa) should submit the materials required for applicants.
In addition, international applicants are required to submit:
- International Student Supplement (part of the online application).
- For international students whose primary language is not English, one of the following is required:
- A minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test (or 213 on the computer-based test or 80 on the internet-based test).
- An IELTS minimum score of 6.5.
- For degrees completed in English, the TOEFL or IELTS exam may be waived. Please discuss this with your Admissions Counselor.
- To fulfill the international transcript evaluation requirement, please order one of the following international transcript evaluations approved through the University of Redlands for your coursework or degree earned outside the United States:
- The official Detailed Report (course-by-course) evaluation through the International Education Research Foundation (IERF).
- The official Course-by-course International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) Evaluation through World Education Services (WES).
- Certificate of Finances and supporting financial documentation
- Scan or photocopy of biographical page from your passport and your dependents’ passports (if you will bring dependents).
- Transfer Eligibility Form (only F-1 and J-1 transfer students now studying in the US).
- If you plan to bring a spouse, we must receive a copy of your marriage certificate in English.

Step 3: English Proficiency
For international students whose primary language is not English, one of the following is required:
- TOEFL minimum 80iBT/550 paper based
- IELTS minimum 6.5
- iTEP minimum 3.9
- Duolingo English Test (DET) minimum 105
- For degrees completed in English, the TOEFL or IELTS exam may be waived. If this is the case for you, contact Brad Andrews at brad_andrews@redlands.edu to discuss your options.
Step 4: Transcripts
To fulfill the international transcript requirement, please order one of the following approved international transcript evaluations for your degree earned outside the United States. Course-by-course evaluations are required and should define U.S. equivalency in degree completion, and degree cumulative grade point average (GPA).
- The official Detailed Report (course-by-course) evaluation through International Education Research Foundation (IERF)
- The official course-by-course International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) Evaluation through World Education Services (WES)
- The Course Analysis (course by course) evaluation often referred to as a "Transcript Evaluation" through Spantran.
- The Further Education, course-by-course evaluation offered by Education Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE)
Applicants should have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale from an accredited undergraduate program and must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in music.
Step 4: Letters of Recommendation
Arrange to have two letters of recommendation from persons qualified to address your experience in relation to your possible success in your intended major field.
Step 5: Submit the Certificate of Finances
The U.S. government requires all international applicants to have the financial resources to pay for their school expenses.

- U.S. government and university financial aid programs are not available for international students, but the Conservatory of Music does offer graduate assistantships based on the application and audition.

Students interested in the Johnston Center must submit applications to the University of Redlands and the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies. Students may indicate their interest in the Academics section of the University of Redlands Common Application. A supplemental Johnston Application will be required once you submit your application to the University. A link will be available in your application status portal.
Please contact the Admissions Office at admissions@redlands.edu for more information on the Johnston application. Students will be notified of this decision via their application status portal.
The Johnston Center strongly encourages visiting campus to experience the program’s connected living-learning community. Opportunities include overnight stays, classroom visits, and meetings with the Johnston Center Director Tim Seiber. The University of Redlands understands the unique needs of international applicants and our knowledgeable and caring team is ready to assist through every step of the process.
All international students studying in the United States require an F-1 or J-1 visa. Accordingly, international applicants should plan to apply no later than 13 weeks prior to the start of their intended academic start term. This typically allows enough time to submit transcript evaluation requests and other needed documentation and also have our Admissions Review Committee review the application and provide and official admission decision with adequate time for visa processing.
For international students whose primary language is not English, there is a required minimum TOEFL score of 213 for the computer-based test or 80 for the Internet-based test. An IELTS minimum score of 6.5 will also satisfy the language requirement.
In addition, international applicants are required to submit:
- International Student Supplement (part of the online application)
- Evidence of English language proficiency
- International Transcript Evaluation
- Certificate of Finances and supporting financial documentation
- Scan or photocopy of biographical page from your passport and your dependents' passports (if you will bring dependents)
- SEVIS Transfer Release Form (only F-1 and J-1 transfer students now studying in the US)
If you plan to bring a spouse, we must receive a copy of your marriage certificate in English.

In addition to graduate program application process, submit to CSDCAS your transcript evaluation by IERF or WES and your English language test scores. Submission code is C122.
Passing scores are as follows:
- TOEFL: Minimum of 80.
- IELTS: Minimum of 6.5.
- PTE: Minimum of 80.
Non-U.S. citizens must show proof of financial resources to cover the expenses of the program. Applications are reviewed by the department without a financial statement. However, if admitted, a financial statement is required.
