Academic Success Coaching

Similar to how an athletic coach encourages and supports you in becoming your best athletic self, our Academic Success Coaches can help you become your best academic self.

What is Academic Success Coaching?

Similar to how an athletic coach encourages and supports you in becoming your best athletic self, our Academic Success Coaches can help you become your best academic self.

Academic Success Coaches help you develop skills and strategies to successfully navigate college and realize your full potential. Coaches will work with you to identify and utilize new learning tools and strategies to help meet your academic and personal goals during your time at University of Redlands.

Our coaches are different from academic advisors or counselors/therapists in that they help you develop academic and personal skills to become a stronger student. Through a series of one-on-one appointments, you will work with your coach to grow in academic strength, grit, and resilience to get you where you want to be academically.

Academic Success Coaches provide holistic support in the following areas:

  • Motivation
  • Goal setting and attainment
  • Effective study strategies
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Time management and task prioritization
  • Recognizing and marketing your strengths
  • Adulting

How to Get Started

Meet the Academic Success Coaches

Rachel Elliott

Hello, my name is Rachel Elliott, and I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in School Counseling (K–12 and College track) at the University of Redlands, with the goal of becoming a counselor at the elementary school, high school, or college level. I also hold a Master’s degree in Child Life from the University of La Verne. Currently, I work in the Redlands Unified School District, supporting Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students with special needs.

Outside of my professional and academic pursuits, I enjoy hiking, spending time at Disneyland, watching Harry Potter marathons, and sharing time with my family and boyfriend.

My passion for counseling stems from my own educational journey and the challenges I encountered along the way. These growing pains have given me a unique perspective, as well as strategies I am eager to share with others. I am committed to empowering students to overcome obstacles, discover their strengths, and navigate their paths with confidence.

Evely Torres

Hi, my name is Evely and I am a second-year graduate student in the School Counseling college track program. On top of being an Academic Success Coach, I am also the Graduate Assistant for the university's HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) Office, Graduate Admissions Office, and the International Students & Scholars (ISS) Office. In my free time I like to go on picnics, read, try new vegetarian recipes, see a new Netflix documentary, or crochet.

I am driven by the desire to empower and encourage students and aim to meet you where you are.

Tony Hernandez

I'm Tony, a senior psychology student at the University of Redlands about to begin my graduate journey in clinical mental health counseling. I've navigated my own academic path with effort and persistence, and I get that college comes with its share of curveballs. My approach is straightforward: meet you where you're at and help us figure out what's already working in your favor. Sometimes we're in a better spot than we think—we just need a fresh perspective on how to work smarter rather than harder, especially when feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like the way deadlines tend to sneak up on us.

Outside of academics, I stay busy running my own catering business, dabble a bit as a DJ, and serve the veteran community through my work at the San Bernardino Vet Center since 2019. These experiences keep me grounded and remind me that balance isn't about perfection—it's about finding what works, getting the most out of your college experience, and actually enjoying the ride while learning a lot.

Samantha Baylus

Hi! My name is Samantha, I am a senior at the University of Redlands studying psychology and political science, and I am looking forward to applying to PsyD programs this year to pursue a career as a clinical psychologist. I am involved in Greek Life, the Study Away Ambassador program, CHAMPS (a one on one peer mentoring program for high school students), as well as the Institute for the Advancement of Psychology as a non-clinical intern.

Outside of school, work, and extracurriculars, I love traveling to new places and spending time outdoors, as well as playing tennis and spending time with my friends and family.

I am passionate about providing support to students with their academic and personal goals throughout the challenges that they face during college. Throughout my own experience at the University of Redlands, I have learned so much about myself and others and believe that I can offer a compassionate, but honest perspective on challenges students may be facing.
