Your Rights Under Title IX:

Can Title IX protect my education during pregnancy or parenting?

Yes! You must be treated like any other student with a temporary medical condition. This includes:

  • Equal access to programs and services
  • Reasonable accommodations
  • No forced withdrawal or change to your academic plans

Are absences for pregnancy or childbirth excused?

Yes. Absences for any of the following must be excused if medically necessary:

  • Pregnancy
  • Childbirth
  • Abortion

You must be allowed:

  • To return to your same academic status
  • A reasonable amount of time to make up missed work

What if my professor has a strict attendance policy?

Faculty policies must comply with federal law. If a policy conflicts with Title IX protections, the University must ensure it is adjusted. Contact the Title IX Coordinator with concerns.

Do I get access to extra academic services?

Yes. If the University offers support like tutoring or flexible deadlines for other medical conditions, you are entitled to the same support.

Can I be excluded from off-campus programs or internships?

No. You cannot be excluded from internships, clinicals, or fieldwork due to pregnancy. A doctor’s note can only be required if it's required of all students with medical needs.

What if someone makes offensive comments about my pregnancy?

That’s harassment, and it’s prohibited. If you experience or witness this:

Can I take a leave and keep my student status or scholarships?

Yes. You may keep your student status for up to one academic year. If you wish to take a longer leave, contact Academic Success & Disability Services to discuss options.
